Change United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) use of Pilot Island as a migratory bird breeding ground. Preserve, restore, and reconstruct the historic structures, flora and fauna, restore the fisheries. and remove the air and water pollution on and around Pilot Island. Open the Island for public visitation and education. The lighthouse/keepers building, built in 1858, is listed on the Register of National Historic Places (#83004279) and is considered a treasure. Maintain Pilot Islands historic lighthouse as an active navigation aid for marine traffic through Death's Door. Help USFWS achieve their 50% cormorant reduction goal in the Green Bay/Door County area by eliminating all cormorants from Pilot Island. The Towns of Washington and Liberty Grove have sent letters to USFWS requesting they stop using Pilot Island as a breeding ground. The Door County Board of Supervisors has signed a resolution asking Martha Williams the Director of Fish and Wildlife to remove the birds from Pilot Island (The Resolution can be viewed on "Work in Progress" page). Sixty three percent of all cormorants that reside in the State of Wisconsin are located on Pilot and Spider Islands. The Islands are within 9 miles of Washington Islands Detroit Harbor. Detroit Harbor is a major spawning ground for bass, perch and other fish. The fisheries in the Northern Door County area have diminished drastically over the last 20 years. It is time Fish and Wildlife did their due dilligence on the impacts the cormorants and pelicans have had on the area.
